BAE Systems stood accused of bribing Saudi officials to sweeten an arms deal. However, after anger from Saudi Arabia and threats of lost business from BAE, the UK’s Serious Fraud Office’s investigation has been shut down. Tony Blair said national security, rather than economics, dictated the decision.

He took on an initiative to attract and accommodate illegal immigrants in order to sustain a dwindling labor force in Iowa. The initiative included a provision to block federal quotas as well as a proposal to establish welcome centers to aid immigrants, legally and culturally. He later dropped the issue because it was jeopardizing his re-election.
