The Department of Homeland Security will move forward with plans to implement the REAL ID Act despite widespread opposition from citizens and state legislatures. Sen. Leahy and other Democrats have sponsored repeal legislation, but DHS spokesman Russ Knocke says REAL ID is “righteous” and says states must comply by May 2008.

Growing resistance to proposed reforms now threatens passage of a bill that would fulfill Democrats’ campaign promise of cleaner fundraising and lobbying practices. Democrats want to keep the big campaign donations and lavish parties that lobbyists put together for them, and don’t want to wait a year after service to become lobbyists themselves.
